Frederick Eichhorst started school at NMS at age five in 2005 (the picture is from 2007). With six years Freddie (born Dec 1999) learned how to sail. After having been coached for several years by Florentine Baumann, who (besides her teaching job at NMS) voluntarily worked as district sailing coach for the Optimist Dinghy Class at Lake Wannsee, Frederick became the youngest participant of the International German Championship for Optimist in 2009. He successfully participated in many more national and international sailing regattas ranking top 10 of Germany’s Optimist sailors. After competing in the Olympic sailboat class 470 he soon searched for new challenges and in 2016 first tried out the foiling catamaran class.

Dear Parents,
On June 30 2017, starting at 6 p.m., the second Long Night of Knowledge will take place at the Nelson-Mandela-School. During this event, which is based on Berlin's famous tradition of the ‘Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften’, students and teachers want to present to you interesting projects and lectures in Sciences and Arts.

We live in a post-truth world where alternative facts and fake news have become the norm. So how can our students use media critically to become effective researchers who can have confidence in the information they find? Those issues were the background to the first of two workshops at the Freie Universität. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Petra Anders (FB Erziehungswissenschaft und Psychologie: Grundschulpädagogik/Deutsch/DaZ) and her team of trainee teachers, children in 5C were set to develop their skills of Medienkritikfähigkeit, or critical use of media. The workshops were based on 5C’s current research topic for a presentation in history: the afterlife in ancient Egypt.

The two-hour workshop was divided into three stations: (1) finding and evaluating information on ideas about death in ancient Egypt (2) how to handle pictures found online (3) recognizing fake news. This workshop coincides with the implementation of the Basiscurriculum Medienbildung. As it is quite challenging for schools to teach the competencies of ‘analysis’ and ‘reflection’, this cooperation with an external partner like the FU is a wonderful opportunity for students at the Nelson Mandela School.

So what did the children report on what they had learnt?

On Tuesday, 13 June 2017, P23 had their annual fun run. Motivated by the pledges for donations from parents, family and friends, the students took to the track around the school yard with the aim of running at least 20 laps each. Some students even managed to run 100 laps! Proceeds from this year’s Fit-for-fun will go to renovating the Chillhof of P23.

On Saturday, the 20th of May, 18 of our students from grade 7 to grade 12 participated in the Avon Frauenlauf: an annual event which raises money for cancer research. Our students took part in the 5 km race. Before the run, all participants warmed up together and took part in a massive mannequin challenge; trying to break the world record. There were 18,000 women in total participating in the various races. There was a very casual, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. As a gift, the girls received goodie bags filled with Avon products.

We would like to thank all the runners for their enthusiasm, Herr Fraikin for lending us the NMS shirts and allowing us to train with him. Thanks also to Cormac and William from 10d, our helpers on the day. Finally, thanks to Melina and Fenya from 10c, and Anna and Paula from 10d and Mrs. McCabe for organizing our school team.
