On March 8 11 NMS Upper Secondary Art students (Q4 LK Art I) tested several assignments of their museum’s guidebookon 32 WPU Art students from years 9 and 10. Once again, Friederike Holländer had prepared the studio pavilion – the extended workspace of the Bauhaus-Archiv – perfectly by setting up a creative art studio with all materials and tools necessary to fulfill the tasks of our Leistungskurs students. By now, the collection has shrunk drastically due to the first phase of a long construction period to enlarge the exhibition space at Bauhaus. Nevertheless, after Hettie and Emilia had explained the purpose of their museum’s guidebook and given an overview of the workshop, the 32 students of Years 9 and 10 strolled though the Bauhaus collection to find inspirations to work on their given tasks.

Class 3C finished studying light, optics and optical illusions by using acrylic paints to camouflage our hands with the fur and feather patterns of our favourite animals. It was a challenging, fun and messy afternoon!

Dear Nelson Mandela School Community,

It is with great pleasure that I inform you that our debating team, made up of Julia Dannemann, Mark Braasch, Alec Dent, James Keogh, Meret Weber and Yara Abdel-Ghany, has won all three debates and are the winners of this year’s Debating Matters for the second year running. The topics they debated for, or against, were:

  • “Humanity should fear advances in artificial intelligence”
  • “Technological progress will not solve society's environmental issues”
  • “Childhood vaccinations should be compulsory”
  • “We should accept the risk inherent in contact sports”

On March 8 a small group of initiators, Meret Weber (10c), Clara Schneck (IB12), Fanny Tockner (Q2) and Florentine Baumann, met to discuss the chances of an application of our school to become a BERLINER KLIMA-SCHULE. The label certifies schools that offer several activities towards sustainability and an eco-friendly school atmosphere.

UNRWA stands for United Nations Relief and Works Agency. It focuses on Palestine refugees and wants to help these refugees achieve their full potential in human development.

UNRWA also has a smaller program called “My Voice- My School”, which is an education project that is focused on giving young people around the world a voice – the ability to speak up. It pairs up schools from Syria, Gaza and Lebanon with schools in the Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States of America. Then the paired up classes interact via Skype or another online platform and get to discuss a topic that was given to them beforehand. Our school, the Nelson Mandela School of Berlin (Germany) , was paired up with the El Khairieh School in Latakia (Syria).

For Students, Parents, Teachers & Educators

The Nelson Mandela School Cool Tools are collected, shared and written by NMS teacher and Head of IT Annemieke Akkermans. Her favourite cool tools for educators are interactive, promote engaged learning, are free of charge and don’t require the creation of an account. Check out the latest Cool Tool!

for February 2017:  My Simple Show

Powerpoint, Prezi – with the MSA-exams coming up, why not check out other presentation tools? Perhaps My Simple Show isn’t the best format for the MSA, as you’ll get to do all the talking beforehand – still, this tool allows you to create excellent audio and video explainers for free. Want to write a biography or visualise what happens to H2O when it is freezing cold? Write a short script, add the images and then add your voice-over.

https://www.mysimpleshow.com/

Or why not use the computer-generated voice? Try to feed it German or Spanish text and have a laugh... Have a look at one of the short examples and try it out yourself. It’s easy, effective and free, which makes this a definite Cool Tool. For students, teachers – and yes, of course for parents too :)
