Dear Nelson Mandela community,

Many of the salaried (“angestellte”) teachers at the school will be striking on the 4 & 5 of December. The strike has been called for by the GEW (Berlin teachers union) and is Berlin-wide. Our demands to the Berlin government remain the same. More equality between the pay structures of the salaried and civil servant (“Beamte”) teachers and better working conditions for mature teachers. Please see this document from the GEW for more information.

We appreciate your support and many thank to those of you that have send in letters to the education department. We have heard that many of you have received a return letter, stating the position of the Berlin Government and what they are doing for teachers. We are currently working on a letter that you can reply with.

Even though some adjustments have been made to teacher salaries, our demands have not been addressed. As a result the struggle continues.

We take the education of the students at Nelson Mandela School very seriously and we understand that us striking affects their education. However, the tactics of the Education Department to ignore our demands have forced us to take these actions.

We ask for your continued support.

Kind regards.

Tom Hyland (on behalf of the striking teachers)
