Salvadore Brandt's documentary film, The Children of Beslan - An Observation, portrays the development process of the theatre piece carrying the same name over a period of 13 months. Both Nadja Tenge, the theater director and Mrs. Nihal Adler, Head of the Language Department at Nelson Mandela School carried out the theater piece together with the students of a 10th grade English group at NMS. The theater piece is supported by the Berliner Projektförderung Kulturelle Bildung

The play, The Children of Beslan, is based on the Beslan massacre, which took place in September 2004.

During the celebration of the first day of school for many young children, Chechen terrorists took 1100 children and adults hostage in a school gym hall in north Ossetia. The hostage drama ended after three days in a tragedy. Following the storming of the building by Russian troops, 331 hostages, 176 of whom were children, died.

The NMS students developed their own theater piece on the massacre following extensive research.

The film maker Salvadore Brandt accompanied the students and filmed them as they were trying to come to terms with the process of creating a challenging theater piece, through characterization and rehearsals . He portrays the students battling passionately and artistically with themes like suffering, violence and hate. The shooting of the documentary extends beyond the controversially debated opening night.

The Children of Beslan - An Observation is a first-hand and forthright documentation of the theater project Children of Beslan.

The film opening at the Filmbühne in Steinplatz, Berlin, is at 16:00, on 24th February 2013.
