Fancy a life at sea? Realised there isn’t much chance of that whilst living in Berlin? Well, why not do the next best thing? Joint Berlin’s first Sea Shanty Crew!

My name is Myke Stevens and I am looking for people who enjoy singing, playing instruments and fancy trying something different and interesting (oh, and there might possibly be beer and rum on the way). Sea shanties are a type of song traditionally sung onboard ships by sailors whilst completing arduous jobs. Recently they have been used on a popular computer game, and here is a link to a youtube video containing many famous sea shanties. As they have been round for hundreds of years there are many different ways of singing and performing them, and a quick search of sea shanties on youtube brings a plethora of styles, good and bad!

I have been listening to this type of music for over 25 years, as my father has been singing these songs for many years across Europe as part of two shanty groups, Hanging Johnny and now Flash Jack. I believe the time is right for Berlin to have it’s own Sea Shanty crew, or is that Spree Shanty...?

My aim is get a crew over around 5-12 people that enjoy meeting every two weeks or so to practice songs and have fun. You don’t need to be able to play an instrument, as long as you got a voice and a sense of enjoyment then you are welcome to come along. I hope to have a shanty crew ready for the Festival of Nations, with a possible performance at the event.

If you fancy coming to the first meeting in the next few weeks then please contact me via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. At the first meeting we will listen to songs, hear any ideas people have and try a quick sing-song. The first session will be merely a taster, and no commitment is needed...

This is an open call to any members of the Nelson Mandela School community, as well as friends and family further afield...spread the word if you feel someone would like to get involved!
