5 March 2011: 20 Years Odyssey of the Mind – German-International Finals, John F. Kennedy School

The excitement on the chilly morning was palpable as the group of contestants from the Nelson Madela School Berlin arrived at the JFK School at 8:45 on Saturday, March 5th. Students from as far away as Shanghai, St. Petersburg, Belarus, the Ukraine, France and Italy were already milling about, busy with sets and props.

The six 5th graders and one 4th grader quickly got on their costumes and set up their backdrops for the final rehearsal before going on stage as the third performance in a group of seven. Their theme was "The Tour Guide", an eight minute skit, written by themselves with the character Amelia Bedelia as the guide who, by taking figures of speech literally, creates a series of misunderstandings. Their witty text with a total of 17 different idioms, presented with aplomb was awarded with the total of 193 points out of a maximum of 200. The highest in their group. Well done!

A huge thank you goes out to the coach Mrs Averil Harrison Thümmel whose immense effort and ceaseless patience made the performance possible. Kudos to Mr Tom Zlodre for his support to the Odessy of the Mind project and for staying with the group until the very end of a rewarding and busy day, which ended with folk songs from the Ukraine and Belarus at 19:30.
